Through a Glass Darkly and Other Stories Kate Charles 9781471330179 Books

I dip into short story mysteries only occasionally. But I was intrigued to see Through a Glass Darkly by Kate Charles on Kindle. Fans of Charles' ecclesiastical mysteries, will agree we don't ever get enough of her books.
Readers fond of Charles' character, Rev. Callie Anson, will enjoy the title story. The first encounter, in Italy, of the Anglican priest and her policeman beau, Marco, is revealed. On the same trip Callie encounters a mysterious woman, one I wouldn't mind seeing again in a future book.
Each of the five previously-published short stories in this collection has a punch. Ecclesiastical mysteries are, by nature, cozies. Yet Charles's books always capture an eerie ambience of old churches' spirits, and while holding it firm, fold in seemingly ordinary lives and events.
I will even admit to having read the ending of the last story, True Confessions, three times to be certain. The narrator, a chilling female character, is someone you won't want to meet in the shadows. If you've ever been a member of a women's church group, such as an altar guild, you'll appreciate the hopes and plans of a group of women who have their eyes on Father Luke. That Old Eternal Triangle has an artful twist you won't see coming. And Sheep's Clothing's plot opens with the narrators confession, "I'm just another dumpy middle-aged woman." One, however, full of very dark secrets. Thanks Kate, more please!

Through a Glass Darkly and Other Stories Kate Charles 9781471330179 Books Reviews

This is a collection of five short stories. The title story features Callie Anson - the young female priest in the Church of England who is the main character in three of the author's mystery novels. Here she is taking a short break in Venice and stumbles across what she thinks may be a crime.

The other four stories all feature a crime or a mystery of some sort as might be expected from this author. All the stories are well written and have interesting characters. I liked the twists which lead the reader right up the garden path before revealing the truth. My personal favourite is `That Old Eternal Triangle' with `The Murder at the Vicarage' a close second.

If you want a quick read and enjoy stories which feature the Church of England then you love this small collection.
As a female Episcopal priest who likes to occasionally "escape" by reading church-based mysteries, Kate Charles is one of the authors to whom I turn. I've read all of her Callie Anson books and hope for more. It's rather curious that there are quite a number of mystery series in which the protagonist is either an Anglican or Episcopal (the American "version") priest, usually dating a policeman, detective, chief of police, etc. In Callie's case he's an attorney. What I like best about Charles' works is that there is more time actually spent in specific focus on life in the parish, on the heroine's priestly duties, responsibilities, challenges, joys, and burdens. That said, as much as I enjoyed this collection of short stories, and yes, would recommend it, I missed the opportunity for deeper character development, for more expansion of plot. It IS a great Summer read, great for the aforementioned escape reading, and perhaps best yet for someone whose reading time doesn't allow one to get lost in a hefty page-turner.
Kate Charles writes mysteries with a Church of England connection. After eleven novels, this is her first collection of short stories. 'Through A Glass Darkly' takes place in Venice and introduces future series 'detective'- and Anglican Priest- Callie Anson. 'Sheep'e Clothing' has a surprise twist at the end. 'That Old Eternal Triangle' is exactly that. 'The Murder In The Vicarage' lets Kate Charles show her slyly, humorous side. 'True Confessions' is a tale of a woman who starts to attend church and go to weekly Confession- with unexpected consequences. Kate Charles has long been one of the most underrated of mystery writers. This is a good collection. Read it.
