What was the purpose of Stonehenge? Forget temples, forget observatories, the surprisingly simple, but worrying truth was revealed to a young engineer building the M4 motorway over the North Wessex Downs in the fateful year of 1969. A monstrous earthmover scythed through the remains of the builder and exposed an unlikely clue. But only now has it been possible for this remarkable story to be told. Why "Defective Gods"? One thing alone links the young man and the Stonehenge builder - a natural talent for geometry. Both, in their innocence, believe geometry to be elegant and pure. Tom Edwards is charging headlong into life. But it is far more complicated than he thought. His girl leaves him and he is nearly killed; two, maybe three people have been murdered, and he has to work with an unsuccessful Glaswegian Lothario, a jungle fighter with poorly fitting false teeth, a psychotic bridge engineer, a partly self-exploded explosives engineer and a team leader who takes a poetic view of science, maths and geometry. Then he meets the seductive Kitty Moorcot, who introduces him to mathematical philosophy and other, less intellectual, experiences. There are sinister happenings all around. But he works it out, from first principles. Or does he? Is he receiving metaphysical signals or has he just got an over-active imagination. Certainly the ironically uber-rationalistic ghost of the Stonehenge builder thinks he has.

I bought this book on Hal Duncan's recommendation and thought I knew, from the cover and opening chapter, where it was going to go. Ha! It took me someplace better, waltzing through the muddy unintended consequences of trying to get a road built.

In the company of an endearing cast of British eccentrics. I even felt for the villain.

Underlain by an unsettling philosophical question -- what if muddling through, one problem at a time, is what it's all about?

Please tell me there's more coming from this writer.

Defective Gods is an unusual book about an unusual subject with more than a dash of "Hitchhiker's Guide". If you want an unusual read, I suggest you 'strap on some wierd' and see the world through the eyes of Jack Wiltshire (before he is locked away for the public good).
